3 Day Itinerary on Naxos Island, Greece

Naxos is the largest and one of the most enchanting islands in the Cyclades. Whether you’re visiting for the stunning beaches, ancient ruins, or simply to relax, Naxos has something for everyone. Not to mention, Naxos is home to some of the most delicious food. I visited 9 islands when traveling through Greece and can confidently say I had my best meals in Naxos! So get ready to plan an unforgettable 3-day itinerary on Naxos Island Greece.

Things to Know Before Visiting Naxos

Best time of year to visit

Spring (April to June):
Springtime in Naxos is just right. The weather is warm but not scorching, flowers are in full bloom, and the island isnโ€™t swarming with tourists yet. Itโ€™s the ideal time for exploring the villages, hiking, and enjoying the beaches without having to fight for a sunbed. Plus, youโ€™ll catch the islandโ€™s nature at its greenest and most vibrant.

Summer (July to August):
If youโ€™re all about that sun-soaked, beach-bumming life, summer is your jam. July and August are peak season, so expect the island to be buzzing with energy. The beaches are at their best, the water is warm, and the nightlife is on fire. Just remember, you wonโ€™t be the only one with this brilliant idea, so book ahead and get ready to make new friends!

Fall (September to October):
Come September, the crowds start to thin out, but the weather is still dreamy. The sea is at its warmest, the sunsets are spectacular, and thereโ€™s a laid-back vibe that makes you want to stay forever. Fall is a fantastic time to visit if you want all the perks of summer without the hustle and bustle.

Winter (November to March):
Naxos in the winter is a different kind of magic. Itโ€™s quiet, peaceful, and perfect for those who want to experience the island like a local. While you wonโ€™t be lounging on the beach, itโ€™s a great time for exploring the villages, hiking, and soaking up the authentic Greek island life. Just be prepared for cooler weather, closed restaurants, and many tourist attractions shut down for the winter.

How to Get to Naxos

By Ferry:
Ferries are a classic way to arrive in Naxos. Whether you’re coming from Athens or hopping over from another island, booking through Ferryhopper makes it easy to find the best routes and schedules. They have all the options in one place, so you can compare prices and travel times to find the perfect ferry for your trip.

By Plane:
If you prefer to fly, Naxos has a small airport with direct flights from Athens. SkyExpress and Aegean Airlines offer quick, convenient flights that get you to the island in just 45 minutes. Itโ€™s the fastest way to start your Naxian adventure, and youโ€™ll be lounging on the beach or exploring the villages before you know it.

How to Get Around Naxos

Naxos is an island full of hidden gems, and the best way to uncover them is by having your own personal vehicle. While the islandโ€™s main town, Chora, is walkable and charming, the true magic of Naxos lies in its remote beaches, picturesque villages, and scenic mountain roadsโ€”places you can only reach with your own set of wheels.

Rental Car

Having a rental car on Naxos gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Want to spend the morning hiking to the top of Mount Zas, then cool off with a swim at a secluded beach? Or maybe youโ€™d like to take a leisurely drive through the islandโ€™s charming villages like Chalkio and Apeiranthos? With a car, you can create your own adventure, avoiding the crowds and discovering spots that arenโ€™t on the typical tourist map.

For the best deals and a wide selection of vehicles, I recommend booking your rental through DiscoverCars. They offer competitive prices and make it easy to compare options, ensuring you get the perfect car for your Naxos journey. Plus, booking in advance means youโ€™ll have peace of mind, knowing your island adventure is set up and ready to go. Trust me, with a rental car, Naxos becomes your playgroundโ€”so donโ€™t miss out!

ATV

If youโ€™re feeling more adventurous, renting an ATV is another fantastic option. ATVs give you the thrill of zipping down narrow paths and off-road tracks, perfect for reaching those more secluded areas where a car might struggle. Itโ€™s an exciting way to explore the islandโ€™s diverse landscapes and adds a bit of adventure to your trip. To find the best ATV deals, search on google or ask your accommodation if they can book one for you.

Naxos , 3- Day Itinerary Map

This map provides references for things to do on the island.

Day One: Arrive & Explore

Morning:
Arrive in Naxos and pick up your rental car. After settling into your accommodation, it’s time to explore Naxos Town (Chora). Start by wandering through the narrow, winding streets of the old citadel, where history meets modern charm. Pop into one of the many stores for tasteful souvenirs. If you’re a wine lover, consider a visit to the Saint Anna Winery for a tour and tasting session. Book advance online.

Afternoon:
Hit up one of Naxos’s famous beaches like Agia Anna or Agios Prokopios. These stretches of pure white sand and crystal-clear waters are the perfect spots to unwind after your travels.

Evening:
As the sun sets, head back to Naxos Town for a rooftop cocktail. You’ve got options: Swing Bar, 520 Cocktail Bar, Toro Rooftop Cocktail Bar, or The Ocean Clubโ€”all offer stunning views and a laid-back atmosphere. End your day with a delicious dinner at To Elliniko or Nostimon Hellas.

Day Two: Explore Naxos Like a Local

Morning:
Rise and shine! Today, youโ€™re touring the island and some of the most picturesque villages. As stated before, you will want a rental car to explore the island. It may look small, but the driving distances are far!

Start your day bright and early in Melanes, one of the oldest villages on Naxos. Recharge with a Greek coffee at one of the local kafeneia (coffee houses). The laid-back vibe and friendly locals will make you feel right at home.

Afterwards head to Halki Village, a picturesque spot with neoclassical architecture, olive groves, and charming shops. Donโ€™t leave without trying a sweet treat at Dolce Vita Cafe and stopping by the Vallindras Distillery for a taste of the local kitron liqueur.

Afternoon:
After soaking up the charm of Chalkio (Halki), drive up to Filoti, a larger village nestled at the foot of Mount Zas. Filoti is known for its lively atmosphere and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Explore the villageโ€™s narrow streets, and take a peek inside the Church of Panagia Filotitissa.

Filoti Village

Continue your journey to Apeiranthos, often referred to as the โ€œMarble Villageโ€ due to its marble-paved streets and stone houses. Apeiranthos is steeped in history, with roots dating back to Venetian times. Wander through its picturesque lanes, visit one of the villageโ€™s small museums, and take in the stunning mountain views. The vibe here is peaceful and somewhat otherworldly, making it a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon.

Bonus Stops: Koronos and Apollonas (If Time Permits)

Moutsoun Village:

Feeling hungry? Drive to the harbor of Moutsouna for a seafood lunch with a view. This peaceful spot is known for its fresh catches and traditional Greek vibe.

Koronos Village:
If youโ€™re up for more exploration, head to Koronos, another mountain village known for its traditional architecture and scenic surroundings. A short visit will give you a taste of authentic village life in Naxos.

Apollonas Village:
Apollonas is a coastal village famous for the Kouros of Apollonas, anunfinished giant statue that lies serenely by the sea. The drive here offers breathtaking coastal views, and the sight of the Kouros at sunset is something you wonโ€™t forget. If you have time, relax with a drink at a seaside taverna before heading back.

Evening:
For dinner make your way to Rotonda. This is a mountaintop restaurant near Apiranthos thatโ€™s famous for both its food and its panoramic views. I highly recommend going at sunset and make sure to make reservations in advance! After a full day of exploring, head back to Naxos town. If you still have the energy consider a nightcap at the Jazz & Blues Bar or revisit one of the rooftop bars you didnโ€™t try on day one.

Day Three: Hike & Beach Bliss

Morning:
Ready to get active? Start your day with a hike up Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. The trek is challenging but worth it for the bragging rights and the incredible views at the top. If you are not an avid hiker you can still drive up to the viewpoint!

Afternoon:
After your hike, it’s time to reward yourself with a beach day. Head to Plaka Beach and chill at Nomad Beach Club, a trendy spot perfect for lounging. Another great spot for many beach clubs and restaurants is Agios Prokopios Beach. One of my favorite beaches is Orkos Beach to watch the kite surfers. For something quieter, Alyko Beach or Hawaii Beach is a great option. However, there are no services here so make sure you pack food and water. If you do visit Alyko Beach you can visit the abandoned hotel to see the graffiti ruins.

Evening:
As your Naxos adventure comes to a close, enjoy one last sunset at Portara (Temple of Apollo), the iconic marble gate that stands as a symbol of the island. For your final dinner, treat yourself to a meal at Axiotissaโ€”a top-rated restaurant known for its creative twist on Greek cuisine. Be sure to make a reservation in advance!
