Santa Barbara is one of California’s coastal gems, blending Spanish colonial charm with a laid-back California vibe. With its Mediterranean climate, sprawling vineyards, and scenic beaches, Santa Barbara is an ideal destination for a long weekend escape. Here’s everything you need to know about planning your getaway, including the best times to visit, areas to stay in, and things to do! So read on and plan your perfect visit to Santa Barbara.
When to Visit Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara’s Mediterranean climate means there really isn’t a “bad” time to visit, but certain seasons have unique perks depending on what you’re looking for.
Spring (March – May): Spring is one of the best times to visit Santa Barbara, with mild temperatures, wildflowers in bloom, and fewer crowds. This season is perfect for outdoor activities like hiking in the hills or visiting the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
Summer (June – August): Summer is the peak season in Santa Barbara. The sunny, warm weather is ideal for beach days, water activities, and strolling along the scenic waterfront. This is a popular time for events and festivals, but it’s also the busiest season, so expect higher rates and more tourists.
Fall (September – November): Autumn is a favorite for many, as the summer crowds begin to thin, yet the weather stays warm and inviting. Ocean temperatures are also at their peak, so it’s the perfect season for kayaking, paddleboarding, and beach relaxation. Fall is also harvest season in the nearby wine country, making it an ideal time for wine tasting.
Winter (December – February): Santa Barbara’s winters are mild, with cool evenings and temperatures hovering around the mid-60s°F during the day. It’s a peaceful time to visit, especially if you’re looking for a relaxing escape. You’ll also find better deals on accommodations!

Where to Stay in Santa Barbara
When it comes to accommodations, Santa Barbara offers a variety of options based on your interests. Here are the top areas to consider:
Downtown Santa Barbara
Close to attractions like the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse, State Street shops, and trendy restaurants. A great choice if you want easy access to the city and do not have a rental car.
- Hotel Santa Barbara
- Hotel Santa Barbara is a cozy, Spanish Revival-style retreat in downtown Santa Barbara, just steps from State Street and the beach. Guests enjoy a relaxed vibe with amenities like a welcoming lobby, garden courtyard, and easy access to local shops and dining.
- Palihouse Santa Barbara
- This boutique hotel feels like a Mediterranean retreat with lush gardens and Spanish-inspired decor. Located in the historic Presidio neighborhood, Palihouse has a chic yet relaxed atmosphere.
- Hotel Virginia Santa Barbara
- Recently renovated, Hotel Virginia blends historical charm with modern amenities. Its central location near State Street means you’re just steps away from Santa Barbara’s best restaurants, shops, and attractions.
The Funk Zone
This vibrant, artsy neighborhood is packed with wine-tasting rooms, breweries, and funky galleries. Perfect for nightlife and food lovers.
- Hotel Californian
- Vibe: Luxurious and Moroccan-inspired, Hotel Californian combines Santa Barbara’s Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with a twist. It’s steps from the beach and State Street, and close to the Funk Zone, making it ideal for dining, shopping, and wine tasting.
- Amenities: Rooftop pool with ocean views, Moroccan-style spa, two upscale restaurants, and beach cruiser bikes for guests.

West or East Beach & Waterfront
For ocean views and beach activities, staying near East Beach provides easy access to the water and is close to Stearns Wharf and Cabrillo Boulevard for beachside strolls. I recommend looking at VRBOs if you want to stay in these areas. Check out the best vacation rentals in Santa Barbara.
Montecito
A bit quieter and upscale, Montecito is known for luxury accommodations, including Belmond El Encanto. The Montecito area near Butterfly Beach is also beautiful. There are not very many hotels in this area, so again, I suggest booking a vacation rental with VRBO.
Getting to & Around Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is easy to reach by plane or car, making it a convenient destination for both out-of-state travelers and locals alike. Here’s a quick guide on how to get there and whether renting a car is worth it.
Getting to Santa Barbara
If you’re flying, Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is the closest and most convenient airport, just 10 miles from downtown. Major airlines such as American, Delta, and United have flights into SBA.
For more flight options, you can also fly into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and rent a car. However, you will have to drive about 1.5 to 2 hours up the coast to reach Santa Barbara. Driving is a great option if you plan to make a trip up the famous Pacific Coast Highway. Make sure to stop in the quaint town of Cambria along your route!
Do You Need a Rental Car when Visiting Santa Barbara?
Santa Barbara is compact and very walkable, with many attractions, restaurants, and shops located within easy reach. It is also a quick 15-minute Uber ride from the main airport (SBA). However, having a rental car can be beneficial depending on your itinerary.
Pros of Having a Car:
- Flexibility to Explore Nearby Areas: Having a car allows you to explore beyond downtown, from the wine country in the Santa Ynez Valley to hiking trails and coastal towns like Carpinteria or Summerland.
- More Freedom with Beach Hopping and Hiking: Santa Barbara has beautiful hikes and beaches that may require a car for easy access, especially if you plan to hit spots like La Cumbre Vista Point.
Cons of Having a Car:
- Parking Challenges Downtown: While parking is available, it can be limited and expensive in popular areas, especially in the Funk Zone and near State Street.
- Great Public Transport and Bike Options: Santa Barbara has a reliable bus system and ample bike rentals, especially in tourist-friendly areas like the waterfront and downtown.
If your plans mainly involve staying downtown or beach hopping nearby, you can easily get by without a car or use a rideshare when needed. But for those who want to explore the surrounding wine country or take a few day trips, a rental car can add flexibility to your Santa Barbara adventure! Always book your rental car through DiscoverCars for the best rates. (Please note for the itinerary I curated below, we did not have a rental car!).
